The Second Siberian Ambient Salon

The second edition of the Siberian Ambient Salon will take place in the exhibition space of the Sybir Memorial Museum, where we once again have the opportunity to experience a fascinating mixture of sounds, which this year are based on Siberian nature, reflecting the horror and beauty of this ‘inhuman land’.

This year’s Siberian Salon is an extension of the musical background that is usually included at the permanent exhibition of the Sybir Memorial Museum — background that encourages imagination and emotions of visitors and helps them move in time and space experienced by Poles deported to Siberia.

The inspiration for the creation of the Second Siberian Ambient Salon are the elements of throat singing, often accompanied by traditional musical instruments, including, among others: in the Republic of Tuva. Tuvins believe that this type of singing connects a man with mysticism and nature. Vocal cords used in this way are still used today in Siberia (and beyond) and, when accompanied by instruments such as the byzaanchy, igil or morin khuur, they enable the production of amazing sounds and at the same time present a sound image of the endless steppe and taiga.

For that special performance, we invited a mysterious figure in a hood — Gaap Kvlt, who, thanks to exploring the path of the Tuvins, will take you on a journey among the empty factory buildings of Detroit, the expanses of Siberia, and the clubbing areas of Berlin. He will be accompanied by Dtekk, the originator of the ‘Ambient Salon’ series, who opens the evening with a DJ set.

THE IDEA

The series of events called ‘Ambient Salon’ began in Białystok and originates from the activities of the Up To Date festival and the Technosoul collective. So far, several dozen editions have been held in many Polish cities. When organizing Ambient Salons, we focus on promoting genres such as ambient, modern classical, IDM and even noise. The highlight of the year is the Central Ambient Salon as part of the Up To Date festival, which this year will last from May 30 to June 2 in Białystok.

Siberian Ambient Salon is a series initiated in 2022 by the Sybir Memorial Museum and carried out in cooperation with the Up to Date Festival, as part of the ‘Ambient Salon’ series. The aim of this event, unusual for a museum space, is to present the topics found within the walls of the museum in a modern way.

Siberian Ambient Salon is also a tribute to Węglówka and the recent history of Białystok. The Sybir Memorial Museum was established at Węglowa Street and the first editions of the Up To Date Festival were in the area.

ABOUT THE PLACE

The Sybir Memorial Museum is dedicated to people who, from the end of the 16th century to the mid-20th century, were enslaved and exiled deep into Russia and later the Soviet Union, as well as to those who went there voluntarily. We talk about prisoners, exiles and deportees. We talk about those who discovered Siberia before World War I and actively participated in the development of its vast areas. We combine research results and historians’ narratives with the memories of participants and witnesses of the events. We show enormous emotions hidden in seemingly ordinary objects, taking visitors to an extraordinary land — mysterious, beautiful, and at the same time cruel and ruthless Siberia.
