On June 16, 2025, the Sybir Memorial Museum hosted a special event that brought together history enthusiasts and individuals interested in contemporary social issues.

The guest of honor was Prof. David J. Simon, a renowned scholar from Yale University and Director of the Genocide Studies Program. His lecture, titled “Museums and the Challenges of Rebuilding Communities after Atrocity”, provided powerful insights into how societies recover from the trauma of genocide and mass violence — and the essential role museums can play in that healing process.

Prof. Simon focused on the sensitive and complex task of rebuilding trust among communities affected by extreme violence. He emphasized that institutions like the Sybir Memorial Museum serve not only educational purposes but also therapeutic ones. Drawing on examples from Rwanda to the Balkans, he illustrated how museums have become platforms for dialogue and reconciliation in societies once fractured by conflict.

The lecture attracted both the audience gathered at the museum and a group of online participants. Attendees, whether present in the hall or joining virtually, had the opportunity to ask questions and share their reflections and insights.

Following the lecture, Prof. Simon led a workshop for museum staff entitled “Antrocity Museums in the Digital Age.” This hands-on session explored how emerging technologies — including artificial intelligence — can enhance the work of museums. Topics included the development of interactive, emotionally engaging exhibits, with special attention to the educational potential of video games as innovative tools for historical storytelling.

The workshop also served as a lively forum for exchanging ideas on how museums can effectively use digital tools to engage and inspire younger audiences.
