The Memorial Association was formally established in 1989 in order to research political repression in the Soviet Union and rehabilitate those who experienced it. The online database of victims of political terror, containing over three million records has been created. In 2021, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation commanded the liquidation of Memorial, which was officially closed a few months later. In October 2022, the Russian Memorial was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize.
