We invite you to the premiere of the latest audiobook from the Sybir Memorial Museum, There Once Was a Family by Henryka Bogusławska. First published in 2017, the memoir of a survivor of deportation to Sybir was the first volume in the Museum’s Memoirs and Accounts publication series.

After almost ten years, the memoir returns in a new form: as an audiobook narrated by Katarzyna Herman, a theatre and film actress. It is a story that leaves no one unmoved.

The story of Henryka Bogusławska and her siblings is one of hundreds of thousands of stories of Soviet repression against Polish citizens. What makes it exceptional is that these five children were deported to Siberia by the Soviets without their parents: their father, who was involved in the underground resistance, was in hiding, while their mother was in prison. Their grandfather, who boarded the deportation train despite protests from Soviet soldiers, chose to accompany them into exile. After a four-week journey, they arrived in Krasnoyarsk Krai, where their grandfather cared for his grandchildren for as long as he could. When he died, the children were left completely alone in Siberia. Yet they managed to survive. All five returned to Poland in 1946 and, years later, rebuilt their family bonds.

Special guests at the event will be Katarzyna Herman, who lends her voice to this extraordinary story, and the Bogusławski siblings — Honorata, Ryszard and Lucyna — who, together with Henryka, the author of the memoir, survived deportation to Sybir.
