We invite you to an author talk with Mateusz Mazzini on September 24. The author of The End of the Rainbow: Chile after Pinochet will discuss how Poland and Chile have shaped their collective memories of their authoritarian pasts in the aftermath of political transition. We will explore differences in how state violence is understood, as well as the role of memory politics in shaping people’s experiences in both countries.

Mateusz Mazzini (born 1990) is a sociologist, reporter and Latin Americanist, and a graduate of St Antony’s College, University of Oxford. He also studied at the universities of Aberystwyth, Córdoba and the Basque Country. He was a visiting researcher at University College London, where he researched collective memory in Poland and Chile. He currently lectures at Collegium Civitas. For many years, he has contributed to Gazeta Wyborcza, Polityka and Przegląd, and has also published in, among others, The Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy and The Financial Times. He is the author of the reportage books The End of the Rainbow: Chile after Pinochet (2023) and The Real Italy: A Journey in the Footsteps of the Mafia, Migration and Crises (2025).
