We cordially invite you to attend the unique event with Katarzyna Pasternak, Doctor of Humanities and specialist in the culture of Russia, Ukraine and Lithuania. During the event, which takes place on June 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Sybir Memorial Museum, we will primarily look at the genesis of the emergence of new religious movements in Russia.

For a long time in the countries of the Soviet Union, religion was suppressed, temples were destroyed and liturgical books were burned. Communist ideology focused on atheism, and religious activity was severely punished. Monastic and religious life was almost completely abolished. These actions were aimed at completely eradicating the faith.

Relative freedom was brought by the collapse of the Soviet Union. On the rising tide of it there was a massive interest in new religions and cults. After years of repression, Russian society began to search for spirituality again.

One of the answers to the spiritual needs of Russians was the Church of the Last Testament (Kościół Ostatniego Testamentu), whose founder, Sergei Torop, declared himself a prophet and the reincarnation of Jesus. Thousands of believers followed Toropa.

Katarzyna Pasternak, PhD will tell us more about new religious movements and the appearance of self-proclaimed prophets in Siberia.
