We met the winning design concept of the artistic installation "People of the ice".

Intensive works are underway on the substantive part of the permanent exhibition, which will be located in the building of the Sybir Memorial Museum. Part of the exhibition will be the artistic installation "People of the ice". On Monday (20.05) a meeting of the Competition Jury was held. Its task was to select the winning design concept.

The artistic installation "People of the ice" is an important element of the largest museum investment in the East of the Vistula, which is the Sybir Memorial Museum. It has already reached the stage of the so-called building shell. Finishing and installation works are still under way. After the construction is completed, the Museum’s exhibition and equipment will be assembled.

- I would like to strongly emphasize that the "People of the ice" installation will play a very important role in the exhibition of the Sybir Memorial Museum. It is to constitute an element of calmness and respite for those who will visit the Museum. The space around it is supposed to be a place where you can think about what you have seen so far. When choosing the winner, we wanted the instalation to be non-personalized so that everyone who looks at the work could come to their own thoughts, have their own feelings related to both the entire installation and the space of the Museum - emphasized Rafał Rudnicki, deputy president of the City of Bialystok.

Director of the Sybir Museum of Memory, prof. dr hab. Wojciech Śleszyński remarked that the heart of the Museum is a permanent exhibition, on which intensive works are underway:

- The settlement of the competition is another important stage in the buidling of the Sybir Memorial Museum. After the completion of construction works in the new building, the time will come for the construction of the Museum's permanent exhibition. We are currently actively acquiring exhibits, memorabilia and relationships that will fill the content of the Museum’s Permanent Exhibition. Our team is working on it today.

The arrangement concept of the Permanent Exhibition was prepared by the company TEMPORA S.A., and the purpose of the exhibition is to show the history of people who came to live in Siberia and Kazakhstan.

A group of authorities in the composition of the Competition Jury

The competition for the design concept of the installation, the Sybir Memorial Museum, was announced on March 29, 2019. Thirteen people applied for submitting works.

All works were evaluated by a group of experts including historians, sculptors, graphic artists and curators of art. The jury was headed by dr hab. Jarosław Perszko, professor and Vice-Rector of the Białystok University of Technology. The position of the deputy chairman of the court was embraced by graphic designer and stage designer - dr hab. Andrzej Dworakowski, professor of the Bialystok University of Technology. The works were also evaluated by the deputy president of Białystok, Rafał Rudnicki, dr. Macin Zwolski - head of the Scientific Department of the Sybir Memorial Museum, as well as prof. Jacek Jagielski from the University of Arts in Poznań. Consultants with an advisory voice were: Jan Kabac - the author of the design of the building of the Sybir Memorial Museum and Christophe Gaeta - the representative of Tempora S.A - the author of the concept of the permanent exhibition at the Museum.

The verdict of the Competition Jury

The first prize in the amount of 11.000,00 PLN and the invitation of the author of the design concept to be negotiated, was awarded to Ms Martynie Pająk from Poznań. The second prize in the amount of 7.000,00 PLN was received by ARCHIGLASS represented by Tomasz Urbanowicz and Konrad Urbanowicz from Wrocław. At the same time, the Competition Jury decided not to award more prizes.

Chairman of the Competition Jury - dr hab. Jarosław Perszko, professor of the Bialystok University of Technology justified the verdict in the following way:

- On the basis of analysis and discussion, we unanimously accepted that the first prize will receive the work of Ms. Magdalena Pająk from Poznań. There was no doubt that this work is the right one, the best of all sent. Which does not mean that it is perfect. In the conclusions, we wrote about the need to consult both the TEMPORA S.A company and the investor who expects a flexible approach. A winning job is an interesting solution that in no way refers to a specific era. It reflects the universalism that the organizers of the competition intended. Universalism, which unites in itself not only the last period that we most often associate with deportations, ie the period of World War II, but tries to tie up the entire over 200-year time of the Polish nation's experiences. In turn, the work that received the second prize by ARCHIGLASS refers to the close to us social life, which is the family, but what is important does not refer to a specific person. An interesting spatial solution is mounting on a plate that resembles ice or snow fields - said dr. hab. Perszko, professor of the Bialystok University of Technology.

Installation "People of the ice" is an essential part of the permanent exhibition

The artistic installation "People of the Ice", which is an important element of the museum exhibition, will be part of the permanent exhibition of the Sybir Memorial Museum, which will be dedicated to the presence and stay of deportees in Siberia. Located in the pre-war warehouse at ul. Węglowa, the installation is to encourage people to stop while visiting the exhibition and to reflect on the fate of the exiles. "People of the ice" are silhouettes stuck in time, and the inspiration for their creation were ice stalagmites. The complement is to be falling drops which are a symbol of the passing time.

The artistic installation should be made of light material and be placed on a podium with a radius of 280 cm, placed between the columns and the illuminated skylight. The cost of its implementation was initially estimated at PLN 212.000,00 PLN net. This amount includes work related to the installation and transport of installations.
